The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Apologies for the late blog this week, unfortunately I have had no internet in my house since last week and waiting for the technician to come and sort it out. Hopefully normal service will be resumed shortly!
Last week we finished off Chines New Year with a Dragon Dance around school, the children really enjoyed it....especially being allowed to make lots of noise!
We  started our new topic of The Very Hungry Caterpillar as part of our Spring and in the Garden Topic. The children are doing so well with the repetitive story and using so much English language using days of the week, numbers, food names etc.

One of our local Mini Beasts heard about our topic and decided to pay us a visit....

We did our dragon dance, using the musical instruments to scare away the bad spirits

Tried writing some Chines letters to say Happy New Year

We also had a theatre group come in to school to teach us about healthy eating, the children really enjoyed the interactive activities

And we did some threading for our Tiny caterpillar on a leaf

Then the tiny caterpillar ate all the food and became a very big and fat caterpillar

This week we will be continuing with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Following the life cycle of the caterpillar.
Also this week we started our Read Write Inc groups and the children have been trying really hard to learn all the new letter sounds. We will be adding letters o, c, k and u.
In maths we are looking at symmetry and counting how many mini beasts we have, separating two groups and realising we still have the same number.

Important Reminders:

After our theatre group visit we are encouraging the children to eat healthy foods. We would appreciate your help by sending in healthy snacks for merienda, eg. fruit, small sandwich, meats and cheeses, trying to avoid biscuits for snack. Also we would recommend that the children don't bring yogurt drinks as they we are not able to keep them refrigerated. We have a policy in school that we don't allow nuts in the case of allergies.
Could you please ensure your child has a change of clothes in their change bag in case of accidents or when playing in the water. Please also change the clothes to winter/warmer clothing as it's quite cold to change them into shorts and T-shirts.
The rest of the school are changing to email notifications instead of the blog, I have asked a few of the parents which they would prefer and we will go with the majority vote. I am happy to continue with the blog but I understand some people find it easier to access emails.

Have a great week,

Miss Jackie

Saint Valentine/Chinese New Year

We have come to an end of our topic on Numbers & Shapes, most of the children can now recognise numbers to 5 and basic 2D shapes. We will of course be continuing working on these throughout the school year to ensure we are ready for next year in reception.
Before our Mid-term break we managed to make our Valentine's cards to give to someone special.....I hope you all received them! This week we have been completing our Chinese dragons to celebrate Chinese New Year, (this has caused a little bit of confusion with the children, from being San Valentin with dragons and unicorns to Christmas!) We have had such a short time to do this that we will be continuing on Monday with our dragon dance around the school.
Next week we will be starting our new topic of Spring and In the Garden, (Mini beasts)  We will be introducing this with the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by By Eric Carle.
Literacy:  we will be continuing with our letter sounds and some children are already beginning to blend! Next week we will be introducing letters n, p, g, o.
Maths:  we will continue to work with our numbers to 5, then to 10 (and above for our high flyers)
Creative: we will be doing lot's of activities based around our story.

We found numbers hidden in our garden...Lucas found a little penguin too!

Let's write our name

We're going to make a silly soup, a soup that's really silly. We find objects to match the letter in the 'soup'

We made the dragon's head.....

And then we made the body!

Next week we will be practising our Chinese dragon dance as we continue to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Important Reminders:
Please remember to encourage your child to use the letter sound mat that was sent home we are learning to say the sounds in class and also the rhymes. If you would like any further information on the Read Write Inc programme please don't hesitate to ask.
The children are now attempting to write their names. When helping your child at home please remember to use only lower case letters, except for the initial letter of their name. If you repeat the rhyme while doing this it will help your child as we move on through the programme.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Jackie

Numbers and Shapes

Numbers and Shapes

We are coming to the end of our numbers and shapes topic and the children have been working very hard. We use a variety of activities to prevent the children becoming bored and I have to say we are still having them coming over to join in each time and trying so hard to remember those tricky shape or number names.

We also had a special Birthday this week!
Happy 4th Birthday Nayra

We made trains or rockets using 2D shapes

Matching and naming shapes on our shape mat

Rolling the dice, count the dots and match to the number card

We had great fun making things with the large shapes

Then had a rest with a good book

We sang 5 Little Ducks and 5 Little Speckled Frogs

Next week we will be working on our Chinese Dragon to celebrate Chinese New Year, and making some cards for special people on the 14th of this month.
We have been doing really well with our letter sounds and we hope you are all practising with your child at home.

Important Reminders:

Next week is a 4 day week. We have a staff inset day on Friday 9th and then the following Mon, Tues and Wed (12th-15th) is our half-term holiday.
Please help your child by practising their numbers 0-5, then to 10/20.
Practising their weekly letter sound, encouraging them to say the sound and then the rhyme e.g. a-a-a-a, round the apple and down the leaf.

I hope you all had a great weekend, sorry for the late posting this week!

Miss Jackie
