Wild Animals Continued

Wild Animals

This week we have been practising again with writing our own names, the children are all trying really hard and already we are seeing some recognisable letters! We also manage to fit in all our usual weekly activities like maths and number work, computing and ICT and of course lots of creative activities as we make some of the wild animals we have been learning about. These will all be going on our display boards very soon.

We also had a very exciting visit this week when the Policia Local came to see us. They were here to speak to some of our older pupils but very kindly waited for our younger students to come out and say hello. They were inside the police van, calling on the loudspeaker, trying on their hats and of course hearing the siren from the police car. We reinforced how important it is for our children to go to the police if in need of help, e.g if they got lost while at the beach or when out and about.

Next week we will be starting with Sea Animals and Under the Sea. First of all on Monday we will be celebrating Día De Las Canarias and we hope to see some of the children dressed in traditional costumes. There will be a short performance by the Year 6 children at 9.00am in the entrance hall. If you would like to accompany your child to the performance you will be very welcome to bring him/her a little later to class.
A quick reminder that school will be closed for the annual holiday on Tuesday but it will be classes as normal for the rest of the week.
As I am sure you know via email from Mr Bailey we have unfortunately had a change of plans for our summer show. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any concerns about the change, times etc please do not hesitate to let me know, also if your child will be performing on this day.
Have a lovely weekend,
Miss Jackie

Wild Animals

Wild Animals

This week we started looking at wild animals and I've been so surprised by how many animals the children can recognise and name in English!
Once again we have been doing lots of creative activities as well as practising our letter sounds and looking at numbers. The children are all trying really hard and working towards moving up to Reception Class in September.
In the morning for self registration they have all been doing so well with recognising and tracing their names I have now been encouraging them to attempt to write the letters independently and haven't they been doing so well?
In class we have rhymes to say as we write each letter and we will be doing lots more work on this. You can find the rhymes to use at home on:
 www.thebellbird.cambs.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/.../Letter-formation-chart.pd...
We use the Read write inc programme and this will be continued with them through Early Years and also Key stage 1. I will make copies of the charts for your use at home if you would like to make use of them.
Please don't worry if your child is not yet able to write recognisable letters, this is quite normal and it is really quite difficult for their little hands still. We will be doing lots of finger gym activities to help them and I am happy if they attempt it for now.

Trying hard to write our names....

With PC Bruno making sure they're doing it correctly!
Printing our alligators - A is for Alligator

We measured the length and height of the animals using cubes

We used our arms and hands to print the giraffe neck

Printed our paper plate snakes, using rolling pins and bubble wrap

And then cut around the lines to make the snake

And we sponge painted/ collaged elephants for our display

And after a long week, it's time for a story

We hope you enjoy these photographs of the children at work and play, please feel free to use the comments section on this blog with any ideas or suggestions of anything else you might like covered each week.
As always have a great weekend,
Miss Jackie

Farm Animals

Farm Animals

We continued our Farm Animal topic this week with lots more activities, recognising and learning their names, recognising the initial letter sounds and lots of counting!

Counting the animals then identifying the correct number

We painted assorted farm animals and then threaded them with laces to improve our fine finger control in preparation for writing

free painted cows

Used the animal feet to print patterns

Brushed the horses' hair

We used the scissor to very carefully cut out and stick the correct animals for the farm.

We used the computer to listen to and identify the initial letter sounds of the animals

Next week we will be moving on to Wild animals. We have already been learning some new songs and enjoying new stories while looking at the animals.

It has now been confirmed that we will be participating in our summer show on Friday the 16th June. I will be sending out emails shortly to confirm times and venue. This year's show will be:
 The Gruffalo
By: Julia Donaldson.
Our Nursery children will be performing as Owls. I would recommend that we keep the costumes simple making it easier for the children to move when dancing. If you could provide your child brown/beige leggings or trousers and either brown, beige or other neutral colour top. We will make owl hats and wings in class. We don't want any masks that will hide your child's face from all those cameras. We have started practising our songs and dance in class and they all seem to be naturals!
We will also have a small speaking part to say together. I will send home this part to continue practising at home....good luck. You can find the story of The Gruffalo on youtube and we will be singing The Gruffalo Song along with the other classes.

This week's letter sounds will be 'n' and 'p'. you can help your child by identifying objects in your home and listening for the initial letter sounds, e.g pot, sound 'p' or napkin, sound 'n'.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend,
Miss Jackie
